Chapter Twenty-One
The car stopped in a residential street of tall houses, most of which had signs in the front gardens advertising rooms, minibars, full English breakfasts.
âIâll go in and ask,â said Danny.
He disappeared up the steps to the nearest B&B whose sign said We Have Vacancies.
Jen looked out of half-opened eyes, her head still on Finnâs shoulder. His arm around her back and his hand on her waist felt like the most comforting thing sheâd ever known. She should have phoned him weeks ago. She should have trusted him.
Trees were planted at regular intervals down the road, and Jen squinted at them until their leaves blurred into each other and the slight movement caused by the breeze became the breathing of monsters. She shook her head and sat up.
Danny opened the driverâs door.
âTheyâve a single and a double,â he said.
âPerfect,â said Finn.
The proprietor didnât seem so sure when they walked in. A middle-aged woman with dyed blonde hair and dark pink lipstick, her eyes widened into circles of blue outlined with navy eyeliner.
âOh,â she said, looking at Jen. âI didnât realise. You said a girl...â
âOh yes, the clothes, I forgot,â said Danny. âItâs only fancy...â
âDanny and I will share,â said Finn. âItâs fine.â
She frowned. âItâs a double, not a twin.â
âThatâs OK,â said Finn, smiling.
The landlady looked at him, and for a moment it seemed she was about to protest, but she said nothing. She produced keys from behind the counter, her lips slightly pursed.
âJust one night is it?â
âI donât know,â Danny looked at the other two.
âWe have guests arriving for the weekend. Youâll have to find somewhere else if you want to stay longer.â
She showed them to the rooms. The double room was en suite with an actual bath.
âThis is for you boys,â the lady said stiffly, âand you, my dear, are across the corridor.â
The single room was obviously intended for children. The wallpaper had elves and fairies leaping across it, and the curtains were blue with clouds and rainbows.
âBreakfast is at 8.30,â she said. âIâll leave you to it.â
They waited until she had disappeared round the curve in the stairs before collapsing onto the bed in giggles.
âOh my God!â said Danny. âShe didnât know which was worse, two men sleeping together or one of us sleeping with a nun.â
âYou should have told her you were my brother,â Jen said, the tears coursing down her face for the second time that day. âShe might not have minded us sharing then.â
âNo, that would be worse,â Danny gasped. âAn incestuous nun!â
âWe should have pretended we were having a threesome,â said Finn. They rolled about on the double bed hooting with laughter.
Later Danny went out to get food, and Finn helped Jen take off her clothes. Heâd run a bath using the lavender bubble bath supplied by the B&B. She stood in only her underwear while he folded the nunâs robes as best he could, then he turned to her and touched her hair that had tumbled free as soon as the wimple was removed.
